Why is there Lye, a chemical, in my soap?
Lye is an essential ingredient in all handmade, cold-processed soaps. It is the catalyst that turns the liquid vegetable oils they use (olive, coconut, etc) into the hardened product. At the end of the soap-making process, due to the reaction, there is actually no lye left in the final product.
Dr. Squatch includes lye in the ingredients section of their soap bars to be completely transparent on how they craft their soap. If you see any lye-free soaps out there, they are either made out of alternative chemicals or they are just saying that because there is no lye in the final product.
How is Dr. Squatch’s soap different from commercial soaps?
Many brand-name “soaps” aren’t soaps at all. If you start looking at the ingredients, you’ll realize they’re much more similar to detergents that you use to wash your laundry or dishes! During the soap-making process, a by-product is created called glycerine. Large companies, for the sake of mass production and cost efficiency, will replace glycerine with chemicals.
Here at Dr. Squatch, they make soap the old-fashioned way. By cold-processing their soap, the glycerine forms naturally in their bars from plant-derived oils! This means you’re getting a quality product that will help nourish and protect your skin. So go forth, be a man, get dirty, Dr. Squatch has got you covered!
Are Dr. Squatch’s bars hypoallergenic?
While Dr. Squatch’s bars are not formulated to be hypoallergenic, they’ve had many customers with sensitive skin report positive results when using their soaps!
If you have sensitive skin, they recommend checking out the Deep-Sea Goat’s Milk, Eucalyptus Greek Yogurt, or Cool Fresh Aloe bars.

Dr. Squatch’s soaps last 2-3 weeks on average with daily use. The longevity differs between households based on a variety of factors such as the amount of lather, the amount of body hair, the frequency of use, and the water type.
